In The Crucible their is a lot dishonesty. The town people don't know who to trust besides their pastors and their families. Onora O'Neill talks about the real meaning behind trust. She firstly talks about the decline in trust without history. People that are higher ranked in society are trusted more then those who are middle class and others who are bus drivers and things like that. The same as in The Crucible the pastors are trusted more then the other town people. O'Neill says trust should be something determined over time, you shouldn't believe a person that as been dishonest before. Abigail has been dishonest from the beginning of act one, not telling her uncle the full story of what happened in the woods. Throughout the act the town people continue to believe what Abby has said even though people have added more parts to the story. O'Neill says we all trust people for different reasons. Why would you trust someone who has proven to be dishonest ? The town people didn't understand it's not about trust it's about trustworthy people. They couldn't trust anybody in the town but those that were trusted were the dishonest ones. You don't know who you can trust unless you've spent time with them and you know their character, it seems like the town people forgot they were once friends who knew each others years before witches came about.
