They didn't realize they had a good life and happiness being together. Waldinger says it's the quality of your close relationships that matters. George and Lennie had their hardships but they protected one another. Waldinger talks about how a close relationship doesn't just protect your body, it protects your mind. Friends can count on one another in times of need. George has always been there for Lennie, through all of his struggles. He keeps him safe and in line so that everybody takes him seriously and doesn't take advantage of him. Lennie has trouble remembering things, but he can remember most of the memories he has with George. The future farm they will have and all the troubles his gotten into with George helping him out of it. Good friendships are good for the health. George and Lennie truly did have a great relationship. George killing Lennie represented how much he loved Lennie. He would rather kill his friend instead of letting the other hateful guys do it. He wanted Lennie to go to the place he loved the most instead of him seeing death and darkness. That's the care that everybody wants in a friendship that is a true friendship.
