Understanding One's Self : The Catcher and the Rye
In the book The Catcher in the Rye , Holden is very critical of others when he should be critical of himself and understanding his purpose. Thandie Newton explains how as we grow up we began to separate ourselves from everything around us. It is very important to know ones self and Holden does not know him at all. He couldn't even tell Phoebe what we liked about his life or just in general. Newton talks about her life and how regardless of the dancing and being a full time actresses her self of stem was still low. Holden thinks that his smoking and drinking will make him feel better and seem cool when all it's really doing is keeping him from understanding himself. She talks about how awareness can help self connect to the creator (you). If Holden would sit back and become more aware with his actions I feel he would know what we wants to do with his life, he would be a lot happier, and able to focus on schooling. Holden is afraid that when he grows up life will control him but that won't happen if he finds himself. He wouldn't let anything distract him from his goals and staying true to himself. He needs to stop being so ashamed of getting kicked out of school, not having sex with a female, not being the coolest guy in the room, and just be himself. When your comfortable with yourself it doesn't matter whose around, what they have to say or do your going to be confident in yourself.
