Bryan Stevenson starts his speech off with speaking about identity. In 12 Angry Men some of the jurors felt the defendant was guilty because of the area he came from and the record he had. Just because a person has a bad record or lives in the slums doesn't make them capable of murder. In the podcast Serial Sarah Koenig is talking about the murder of Adnan's ex girlfriend by Adnan himself. Adnan was an honor student, involved in sports and clubs. Basically the communities golden child and he is still convinced of murder. Stevenson mentions that you are treated with more respect if you are wealthy and guilty rather then being poor and innocent. In 12 Angry Men he was guilty because he didn't have money, he lived in the slums, and they simply just wanted a verdict so they can go home. They didn't even want to put in time to go over the evidence and truly prove him guilty or not. Stevenson talks about how people don't want to be honest with themselves. Juror #3 didn't want to believe that the defend was innocent regardless of all the evidence that was proven wrong against him. Stevenson talks about how Germans feel about the death penalty, they said to him that because of their history it would be unsettling to them to execute somebody for a crime. Americans have had a horrible history as well but we do not think it is our problem that somebody has been put to death because of a crime we consider unjust. When was it a humans right to determines someones life or death. Juror #3 felt as though he should be called guilty and face is death but how is that his decision. Americans need to reconsider the death penalty, caring about others rights, and making sure that justice is actual served.
